Steel Cut Oats - Name Your Flavor!

I got the idea for flavored steel cut oats from my sweet mother-in-law, and, since my kids will happily eat this wholegrain breakfast food, I keep forging new frontiers....

The Basic Recipe
2 cups steel cut oats (I use Costco's organic Bob's Red Mill brand)
4+ cups water (depends on how soft or chewy you want your oats)  (Can also use other liquid combinations - milk, juice, etc.)

Put the oats in a pot with the water.  Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer.  Cover and cook on low (just simmering), stirring occasionally for 20-30 minutes.  Eat then, or let them sit on your stove top covered until cooled.  They soften further as they cool.  Store in the fridge for up to a week.  I usually make them the evening before and throw the pot in my fridge right before I go to sleep.  We microwave up individual portions as needed for the next week.  We generally top with honey, agave or brown sugar and some milk.

The Fun Part (try one of these flavor additions)!
2 grated apples (skin, too) and some big shakes of cinnamon (add at the same time as the oats)
2-3 cups frozen blueberries, coconut milk and vanilla (add during last 5 minutes of simmering)
2-3 chopped bananas and chopped walnuts (add during last 5 minutes of simmering)

other ideas....  cinnamon/raisin, strawberries/strawberry jam, cranberries, peanut or almond butter?  The world is your oyster.
